Founded in 1906, this Society has grown until today it serves four counties of the Saint Paul area (Ramsey, Dakota, Washington & Chisago) including over 500 dentists as members.  The Saint Paul District Dental Society offers a patient referral service, peer review and mediation, Midwinter Meeting, SPDDS Bulletin, Children's Dental Health Month, Union Gospel Mission Dental Clinic and many leadership and volunteer opportunities. 

Our Mission:  "The SPDDS is the local association of dentists which promotes the oral health of the public, ethics, science and professional advancement of our members."

2010-2011 SPDDS PRESIDENT

An open letter to the members of the Saint Paul District Dental Society:

You recently elected me President of your District.  Many of you know me, but many of you I have not met.  I am complimented that you trusted the recommendation from the Nominating Committee to elect me as your president.  As part of trying to be an effective leader, I would like to tell you a little about my background and what I hope to accomplish with support from the Executive Council and the multiple committees that carry out the programs of the Saint Paul District.

I am a general dentist and practiced the majority of my career in the Roseville community.  A high percentage of my post-graduate education and training focused on the comprehensive care necessary for the patient with advanced stages of dental diseases.  I continue to enjoy working with people and informing and educating them about the benefits of good dental health and the choices available to achieve good dental health.

I have been married to my wife Cherry for 33 years.  We have three children and three grandchildren from our two married daughters.  Cherry is a recently retired RN and has regular opportunities to care for our grandchildren.  A lot of our disposable time is given to being grandparents.  Our summers are enjoyably spent at our lake cabin introducing our grandkids to the fun and beauty associated with a lake and the greater outdoors.  We continue to enjoy a wide variety of water activities in addition to my participation in golf, tennis and downhill skiing. 

I am an active member in the SPDDS Speakers Bureau.  Speakers Bureau is a great organization in Saint Paul that makes it easy to meet and develop friendships with other dentists while learning leadership skills.  It is also a vehicle to keep one informed about current developments and trends in dentistry, to be aware of legislative issues that are confronting dentistry, and a way to stay current with the MDA and SPDDS efforts to serve the membership.  Through the bureau I was introduced to participating in organized dentistry by becoming a member of the Executive Council as the Treasurer.  While participating on the EC, I was elected by the membership to be a delegate to the House of Delegates.  In each of those arenas I believe I represented the membership appropriately.

The Saint Paul District is a very healthy and strong district.  As a district we have benefited from multiple years of great leadership and participation from our membership.  As a result, I believe I can best serve the membership by staying current with all of the issues confronting dentistry and organizing this year’s agenda to allow the EC and our committees to be aware of dental issues that will affect us as a profession, and to continue exploring more ways to serve the membership.  I anticipate this to be a great year.  We have outstanding people on our Executive Council and I will have great support from your President-elect Bill Harrison and we will continue to benefit from our Past President Christine Hermanson’s knowledge as she will continue as an active member on the EC.
